Foods to Promote a Healthy Prostate

Because prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States, many men are beginning to proactively educate themselves regarding their prostate health. This involves a visit to the urologist to discuss any questions that you have about your prostate health, learning about the warning signs for prostate cancer, and arming yourself with information about how to keep your prostate healthy. Nutrition may play a role in prostate health. Though the research is still ongoing, scientists believe that there is a link between certain foods and a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Which foods are beneficial? Here are some foods to include in your diet to promote a healthy prostate:

Berries

Many berries such as strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, which are both important for your health. While antioxidants prevent damage from free radicals, which are molecules that attack healthy cells and raise the risk of cancer, vitamin C may help ease enlarged prostate by reducing swelling and inflammation and promoting healthy urination.

Fish

You’ve heard that you should be eating more fish, but what’s the health benefit? Fish such as freshwater trout, herring, anchovies and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects on the body. This may result in inhibiting tumor growth, which would in turn reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Nuts

Nuts such as pecans, almonds and walnuts contain many important nutrients and are known as an excellent energy source for our bodies. In addition, these nuts contain a mineral called selenium, which may help protect against prostate cancer.

Beans

Replacing red meat or processed meats with beans is a great way to boost your health in general. Beans contain healthy plant protein and fiber, which may aid in prostate health.

Green Tea

Green tea seems to promote good health on many levels. It helps lower cholesterol, has been associated with memory improvement, and may even protect against prostate cancer. Researchers are continuing to study green tea and its many positive effects!

Watermelon

You’ve known that watermelon is a delicious summertime treat since you were a kid, but did you know that watermelon contains an antioxidant called lycopene? Lycopene, which is also found tomatoes, apricots, papaya, guava and pink grapefruit may help lower the risk of prostate cancer.

You get some of these prostate healthy foods in your diet already. If not, then get started today by replacing a less healthy snack with a serving of nuts or berries, or by replacing a less healthy beverage with a serving of green tea. Making a few small changes to your daily diet routine is an easy way to give your prostate – and your whole body – the advantage of good nutritional choices.
